Good Driver discount checker

Auto World Insurance Services · Published September 2026 · Sources checked September 19, 2026

California writes the Good Driver discount into law, and the test is the same at every insurance company. It has nothing to do with your age and everything to do with four facts about your record. Answer them below to see where you stand — and, if you are not there yet, the date you could be.

Check the four Good Driver tests

Was that first license from outside the U.S. or Canada?
Violation points on your driving record in the last 3 years
Accidents in the last 3 years where you were mainly at fault and only property was damaged
In the last 3 years, were you mainly at fault in an accident where someone was hurt or killed?
A DUI conviction in the last 10 years?

The four tests, in the law's own order

  1. Licensed for the previous three years (Insurance Code 1861.025(a)). For most young drivers this is the only test they fail — and it clears on its own, on a date you can circle today.
  2. No more than one violation point in three years, where an accident you mainly caused that damaged only property counts as one point (1861.025(b)(1)).
  3. No at-fault accident in three years that injured or killed someone (1861.025(b)(3)).
  4. No DUI conviction in the previous ten years (1861.025(c)).

Pass all four and the discount is not a favor: the law requires that a Good Driver Discount policy be priced at least 20 percent below what you would otherwise pay for the same coverage (Insurance Code 1861.02(b)). Insurers check your record against the DMV's before they apply it (10 CCR 2632.5).

Why the three-year date matters so much when you are young

Driving record, then annual miles, then years of experience — those are the three factors California requires insurers to weigh most, in that order. Age itself is not on the list. So the day you cross three years licensed with a clean record can change a quote more than a birthday does. If you are close to that date, it can be worth asking for a new quote on it rather than waiting for your renewal.

This checker works from what you enter; insurers check your actual DMV record, and fault is decided under the Insurance Commissioner's rules. It is general information, not a quote or a guarantee of a discount.

Quick answers

How long do I have to be licensed to get California's Good Driver discount?

Three years. Insurance Code section 1861.025(a) requires that you have been licensed to drive for the previous three years. Drivers first licensed outside the U.S. or Canada are presumed to qualify once they have 18 months licensed here and a clean record for that period (section 1861.025(d)).

How much is the Good Driver discount?

The law sets a floor, not an exact amount: a Good Driver Discount policy must be priced at least 20 percent below the rate the driver would otherwise pay for the same coverage (Insurance Code section 1861.02(b)).

Does one ticket cost me the Good Driver discount?

Not by itself. The rule allows no more than one violation point in the previous three years. A second point — or an at-fault accident that injures someone — disqualifies you until it is more than three years old.

Does an accident that was my fault count?

Yes. A principally at-fault accident that caused only property damage counts as one point for this test, and an at-fault accident that caused injury or death disqualifies you (Insurance Code section 1861.025(b)).
